Holy beautiful wood augers Batman! My nephew saw me unpacking this set of Milwaukee wood augers and he said “Are those candy canes?!!!” Haha! These wood auger bits are really awesome and pretty! The double wing spurs on the bit tips will help with clean cuts and the candy-cane red special non-stick finish in the inside of the flutes will keep the chips from sticking to the auger bits. While these bits are rated for impact wrenches, I ain’t letting these bits go near an impact gun, lol!Nuh uh! Us wood workers don’t do that to our tools, hah!The set comes with 1/2”, 3/4”, 7/8” and 1” – a nice rounded set for most projects. The bits comes with a roll storage pouch, a nice touch.Overall, I’m very impressed with this set.

This set comes with most common sizes that would be useful whether you’re running internet wire, electrical cable, or security system cable with plug ends. I’ve already used the small 1/2″ to help relocate my sprinkler timer’s wiring, and also the 7/8″ to bore a hole in my soffit to add an additional exterior security camera. The shanks fit in my regular drill no problem, and on high speed they cut through easily. The sprinkler wire was a small hole so my regular drill did just fine. For the camera wire the hole was significantly larger and the wood thicker, I did have to pull out my impact drill for the extra power (the bits are impact rated). But either way, just let the bit do the work, don’t force it. The fluting pulled the chips out with ease, and only some dust was stuck on them when I was done. The pouch is a nice addition to keep them stored neatly, but doesn’t make or break the set. Note that I’m only using them for the occasional household use, but it’s nice to know they’re there when I need. I can’t say how they would stand up to professional everyday use, but for my needs they did the job well.

These spur auger bits have made life a lot easier for me. In the past, when I had to run cable or plumbing I used flat spade bits. They got the job done but they took for every and had to be resharpened often. These auger bits are great and will replace my old spade bits for ever. These bits cut quickly as they pull themselves through rafters and joists. I’m not a professional, but I still like to save time whenever possible.

We use auger bits almost everyday on our building job sites. We are constantly boring holes for anchor bolts through pressure treated sill plates; through 2x framing lumber to pass plumbing pipes and electrical wires as well as CATV and data cables. I have used self-feeding auger bits with spurs for many years now to cut these holes. When I saw this Milwaukee 4-piece set available from Home Depot in the sizes I most often use, I had to give them a try. As advertised, they do cut clean, smooth holes through both 2x framing as well as 3/4 to 1 1/2 plywood subflooring. They self-feed just as well as other major manufacturers’ bits I have used in the past and as promised the polished, red painted finish does not gum up with wood chips. Although, to be honest, I have never had my other augers get gummed up either. Something that I found somewhat odd was that these bits can be used with an impact drill. In 30 years the only occasion I have ever used an impact, also called a hammer drill, was with a carbide tipped bit when boring into masonry. Why in the world would anyone ever use a hammer drill with an auger bit? The manufacturer also claims these bits will prevent “breakout”. In my experience unless you are extremely careful as you near the end of the bore and let up on the drill, some amount of breakout or blowout is to be expected. Of course, this is of no consequence since these bits will predominantly be used on rough framing lumber. Milwaukee packages these 1/2”, 3/4”, 7/8”, & 1” bits in a sturdy nylon-like roll up pouch that will keep the bits separated when stored. So far these augers have been working great. I cannot speak to how they will hold up when they hit a nail or how many holes they will bore before becoming dull. They are made in China.

These bits are beasts, for drilling serious holes. The bits easily chew through wood while leaving a nice clean entry and exit hole (assuming you use a backer board). With the screw tip front they pull themselves through the wood easily. I did have a bit of an issue with wood splitting but after drilling a small (1/8″) pilot hole first the splitting stopped. Another great, unintended use, was they are perfect for carving pumpkins eyes and nose.

This is Milwaukee’s 4-piece, impact rated, auger bit set (includes 1/2″, 3/4”, 7/8”, and 1” bits, with roll-up canvas pouch). The flutes are non-stick for smother cutting. The bit sizes are perfect for me when I’m drilling out a house for electrical wiring. The hardest part was figuring out how they went in the pouch. Photo 1 show what I finally figured out (I guess it wasn’t really rocket science). You can see in the photo the sewn tabs near the body of the bits—those keep the bits from banging against each other. There’s even room for two more bits. A flap folds over the bits and is secured by a Velco strap (see Photo 2). And then the whole thing rolls up into a nice pouch (see Photo 3).The bits measure about 6 1/2″ long, but the usable depth of drilling is only 4 1/2″ (when you eliminate the shank that goes into the drill and drill tip). The shanks are hex shaped (see Photo 4) so chucks can grip them without slipping. The 3/4”, 7/8”, and 1” bits have 1/2” shanks, and the 1/2” bit has a 3/8“ shank (actually measures 11/32”). The length of the bits make them perfect for drilling through two pieces of 2-by lumber. If you need to make a deeper hole, you’ll need a longer bit or an extension.I tested the bits in my 1/2″ M18 2902-20 hammer drill in a pressure treated 4×6. I drilled 40 holes with the 1” bit and it self-fed each and every time. In fact, my setup was kind of shaky (see Photo 5)—if I pushed down on the bit, the board danced all over the place. So I wound up just laying the bit on the surface and letting the bit do the work. I also drilled holes with the other three sizes in the set. In all cases the bits cut cleanly and quickly.I think these are great bits and look forward to using them on my next house wiring job.

I never had used these auger bits before, and man have I been missing out, these milwakee auger bits cut the smoothest and most accurate holes that I have ever drilled. the speed and the smooth hole saves me time and looks much nicer when I am done. I will be buying more sets with different sizes and replacing my butterfly bits they also stay sharper then most other bits.

I got these to move some wires around , they work perfectly on 2×4 and 2×6 framing. and come in good sizes for some basic wiring among other things . I have carpal tunnel and often find I struggle holding the drill straight for a period of time , so the spurs on this bit are a big help since they make it alot easier to get the bit started in the correct placement., They also cut through about twice as fast as the bargain bits I am used to so the job is done before I ever get to the point that my wrist is fatigued. I wont be buying bargain bits ever again. nice addition to the tool box.

Having been a Milwaukee tool fan for several years, I was pleased to see them come out with this 4-piece auger set. I felt that it would compliment the 18Volt cordless drills that our company had standardized on. We had used similar augers from other manufacturers over the years. When we put our first set into operation it was very apparent that the bit’s design was not as robust as we had expected. In fact, we noticed that the useful life of the bits was going to be significantly less than the other bits we had been using. Keeping a very sharp edge and worm-screw is very important when using any bit on cordless tools. We found that these bits simply did not hold-up as well as those made by competitive brands such as Irwin and others.

I’ve used other auger bits that seem to cut better and faster. I drilled one of each size in a 2 x 4. While each one started easily, they all seemed to plug up in the screw portion (which appears to be finer than other bits) and required considerable force to cut through. These bits do not seem to want to “pull” through, as other auger bits do. At some points they would “catch” and cut real well, but not all the way though. Slower speeds seemed to work best, but not consistently. I’m not sure the “double wing spurs” make any difference as they still had breakout on the finished side, probably because I had to push them to continue cutting. In fact, I think they may actually make the cutting slower. While the red coating did keep the flutes cleaner, it peeled away at the cutting edge of each bit. Also, I’m not sure I’d want to use these bits in old work, where I might hit nails. These bits are OK, and might work for some jobs, but I think I’ll stick with my older, single wing spur auger bits.

REQUIRES A POWERFUL DRILL — The Milwaukee Spur Auger Wood Drilling Bit Set (4-Piece) did not live up to its advertised advantages. The 3/4″ bit did not make a fast, clean hole when drilling into Southern Yellow Pine. My cordless drill would continually lock up, even with higher toque and low speed. I had to use my hammer drill. The drill bits are impact rated so they may work better with an impact tool. The completed hole had breakout which these bits should prevent. The sides of this bit near the tip were rough with protruding metal burrs. The accompanying soft-sided pouch is generic. It is probably intended to fit multiple products so it did not fit these bits well but it can be made to work. This set was appealing because of the multiple bit sizes and because auger bits should work better and make cleaner holes than spade bits. The bits have quick-lok shanks. They are made in China.
