Remember when you could turn your own table legs. Fill your house with as many table legs as you can with the WEN 12 in. x 18 in. 5-Speed Wood Lathe. With 5 different operating speeds, you’ll be able to turn workpieces at 520, 900, 1400, 2150, or 3400 rotations per minute. The 4.5 Amp motor provides maximum torque while the sturdy 70 lbs. plus build prevents walking and wobbling during operation. This beast of a lathe features an MT2 spindle and tailstock taper to tightly hold your workpieces, along with a 7-7/8 in. tool rest for chisel and tool support during operation. The easy-to-use lever clamping system makes adjustments to both the tool rest and the tailstock simple and precise. The WEN Wood Lathe also includes a headstock spur center, a tailstock cup center, a flat wrench, a knockout rod, 2 hex wrenches (3 mm and 5mm), an accessory holder, and a 3-1/8 in. faceplate for turning bowls, cups and other non-spindle workpieces. And, because its a WEN product, your lathe comes backed by a 2-year warranty, a nationwide network of skilled service technicians and a friendly customer help line. Excellent lathe. Plenty of power so far for everything I’ve turned, from 10″ bowls from hickory to bats from oak, hickory, ash, and pecan.

Great lathe! I’m a beginner, but this lathe will likely be all I will ever need. It is designed to take an extension so if I want to do larger projects in the future, that’s all I will need. Set up quickly and easily. Very satisfied so far.

The lathe is strong and sturdy. There are a few things about it that are less than ideal though. The tool rest has chips in it so I couldn’t get a smooth motion until I ground it smooth. The center of the head stock and the tail stock are slightly out of alignment so when using a drill chuck, the bit would bend a bit causing the hole to get elongated. Finally, the motor runs really hot. After about 5 minutes, it is too hot to touch. I have to interrupt turning often to let the motor cool. All that said, the motor is sufficiently powerful that I’ve not had any trouble turning any stock. The head and tail stock are cast and quite solid, I’ve not had any trouble with wobbling or drifting. Now that I’ve adjusted to the things I mentioned, I’m quite happy with the lathe and look forward to many years of use.

This WEN is a well made wood lathe and I’d definitely recommend it for the home craftsman or professional needing a nice compact lathe, It has a strong 4.5 amp motor and has 5-speeds for any carving project. It runs very quiet and doesn’t vibrate the bench, however it can be mounted to the bench top to prevent it from moving when molding stock. The tool rest is made or cast iron and the slide operated very efficiently. The assembly and operating instructions are very complete and detailed. I’m looking forward to many years of wood projects with my WEN 12 inch x 18 inch wood lathe.
